People tend to think of 1 Corinthians 13 in terms of romantic/married love. While that is the kind of love that should be shown to a spouse, there is nothing in the chapter to indicate that that is the principal relationship in which to employ this unconditional love. In all reality, marriage is (or should be) the easiest of family relationships because it is the only one you volunteer for, the only one in which you alone choose the person with whom you are in a relationship. Brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, children–you usually don’t get to choose them. They can hurt you with pain that is unbearable. They can and do affect you deeply with their actions.

But God has called us to love anyway.

We don’t get an out when THEY are not loving.

All night long last night this verse replayed in my mind. May God help me to have this kind of love. It is not something human beings are capable of on their  own, but without it I am nothing and my religion is meaningless.
